Lesson 20

The Tabernacle

Tabernacle

Just before Moses was born, Pharaoh had ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed. So Moses, born into a poor family of slaves, had a death sentence over his head. His parents, however, put him in a basket-boat along the Nile River. And according to God’s plan, Moses was discovered and adopted by an Egyptian princess, the daughter of Pharaoh himself. This adoption took Moses from death to life, from slavery to freedom, and from poverty to riches. It’s a wonderful picture of how Jesus died on the cross so that God could adopt us. And here’s the most amazing thing: God’s plan to adopt us into his family was in place even before he made the world. If you believe in Jesus, you’re plugged in to God’s plan. And He won’t ever unplug you. I’m Plugged In To God’s Plan. Find this in your HoneyWord Bible on page 1257 - Read, Pray, Share!

The Tabernacle

As we have been studying the “Life of Moses” we have seen God deliver, guide, protect, provide, and govern the Israelites. Now we are going to see God’s Love. Up until now, God has spoken to the Israelites through Moses. But God wants to interact with them in a new way; He wants to live with them.

How cool is that? God just wants to hang out with them.

We know that God is holy and can’t come near sin. And the Israelites have committed their fair share of sins, so God came up with a plan. God tells Moses, “Let the people make a sanctuary for Me -a special place where I can live among them. I will tell you exactly how to make it and what to put inside it.”

The sanctuary would be the most holy place anywhere on earth, and all of the Israelites were allowed to help with it. They willingly offered their supplies to build it, and God also gifted them with skills and wisdom to build some of the parts that needed special talents.

This sanctuary the Israelites would build would be a holy place of worship where God would come down from heaven and meet with His people. This sanctuary would be called a tabernacle, and it would be a square tent that could be put up and taken down as the Israelites moved from place to place on their journey to the Promised Land.

Today, we have church buildings where we go each week to worship God and to be taught His Word. Remember, the Israelites were on a long journey through the wilderness to the Promised Land of Canaan, and they did not have a permanent building to visit and worship God. God knew just what they needed. A portable church!!

Today we don’t have to go to a specific tent or building to meet with God. In fact, we can put our faith in Jesus and God will live inside our hearts. This means that you don’t have to go any where to meet with God because He is living inside you! You can worship Him anytime and anywhere. He still wants us to go to church but going to church is not the only place where we can meet with God.
