Sometimes life can be scary, and you can feel like you’re being stalked in a jungle at night. The slightest snap of a twig can shake you to the bone. Do you know that kind of fear? Timothy knew about that kind of fear and he was looking for answers. Paul told him to fight like a tiger. Don’t be timid. Paul wanted Timothy to earn his stripes by being fierce! He challenged him to guard God’s Word, the Bible, and pounce on anyone looking to deceive other Christians! Well, it was finally time...

The Promised Land was just ahead. Moses and the Israelites were at the borders of Canaan. God told Moses to pick a leader from each of the twelve tribes. "Send these men to spy out the land I promised you," God said. So, the twelve spies went to Canaan. When they looked around, they saw “Giant” people. That scared them so much that they wouldn't go in. Then Joshua, one of the spies, stood up with Caleb and shouted, "The Lord is not with them, the Lord is with us! He will give us the land. Do not be afraid of them!" But the Israelites wouldn't listen.

Then the Lord was very angry with them, and He vowed, “Of all those I rescued from Egypt, no one who is twenty years old or older will ever see the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, for they have not obeyed me wholeheartedly. The only exceptions are Caleb and Joshua, for they have wholeheartedly followed the Lord.”

When the spies returned with mixed reports, the Israelites had to make a choice: follow the advice of the ten spies who said the land was a good land but it was too scary to enter or follow the advice of Caleb and Joshua who said God would give them the victory as He promised.

We will all have times in our lives where we have to make the choice to let fear win or to let faith win. Choose to let faith win! Put your faith in Jesus, then you will have a different spirit inside you, the Holy Spirit!

Sometimes when people go fishing, a fish bites so hard that it takes the bait “hook, line, and sinker.” That means the fish not only swallows the bait and hook, but it swallows even the little metal sinker that keeps the hook below the water. That’s one hungry fish! When we say that a person swallows something “hook, line, and sinker,” it means the person believes everything about it. That’s how God wants us to believe his Word, the Bible. He wants us to take it in “hook, line, and sinker” so we understand it, believe it, and obey it. A one-foot ruler equals 12 inches; not some of the time, but all of the time. Rulers help us draw straight lines and measure things accurately. In the same way, God’s Word is a ruler that helps us mark out straight paths for our lives. And the Bible is the standard that never changes. It’s what we use to measure all things spiritual. How are you measuring up? If you don’t know, it’s probably because you’re just starting to learn the Scriptures. For now, just remember this: God’s ruler for our lives is a supernatural Book. He chose just the right writers and gave them the ability to create one living Book, which perfectly speaks His exact Word straight to your heart. Line up with God’s ruler. A mirror on its own is just a piece of glass with a special coating. What makes a mirror really special is the way it shows the figure or image in front of it. You probably used a mirror this morning to get ready for the day. Maybe you brushed your hair and made sure your clothes were just right. Your mirror’s job was to show or reflect your image. When God made people, He gave us the job of reflecting His image like a mirror. That’s extra special, isn’t it? Everyone – including you – has God’s image inside. You reflect what God is like just as your mirror reflects how you look! When we are kind and forgiving, we allow God’s love to be “reflected” off our life like a mirror reflects the way we look.
